Social/ Emotional Learning

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important part of well-rounded student instruction. SEL skills help students academically, emotionally, and socially.

What is SEL?
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for being a healthy adult. This includes problem-solving skills, communication, understanding, as well as building healthy relationships.

SEL focuses on 5 key components:
Self-Awareness
Self-Management
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
Responsible Decision-Making

At South San Antonio ISD our SEL curriculum is Class Catalyst.

Research shows that students who engage in SEL programs like Class Catalyst:
Perform 13% better academically
Experience fewer conduct problems, emotional distress, and drug use
Graduate from high school and college at higher rates
Are less likely to experience mental health disorders
Are less likely to be involved in the juvenile justice system
